Trump wins his first state-by-state victory in Iowa, defeating Republican candidate Rick Santorum by just 0.2 percentage points over his closest competitor, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.
The AP-Gfm poll was conducted Thursday through Saturday in Iowa and New Hampshire, the first of several polls the Republican candidate has conducted in the state.
The poll shows Trump leading Santorum by 5 points nationally, but that is down from the 11-point lead he had in the poll conducted on Jan. 19.
The survey also shows that Trump has a much narrower lead in the South than he did in Iowa.
In South Carolina, the race is tied at 38 percent.
In Georgia, the contest is tied between Trump and former Florida Gov.
Jeb Bush at 37 percent.
And in Tennessee, Trump is ahead of Bush at 34 percent.
The Iowa poll also shows Trump beating out former Gov.
Sarah Palin by 5 percentage points in New Hampshire.
The Associated Press does not sample a random sample.
